Nurturing Pregnancy: Ayurvedic Wisdom for Easing Labor Pain
Dr. Vishakha Wetal- June 2024
MOTHERHOOD is the most pleasant part of every woman’s life and those nine months of pregnancy is the most cherished period not only for that woman but for whole family. But as she approaches the third trimester she becomes anxious at the thought of labor pains. So many questions tend to start circling her mind as the due date draws near.
Full term normal delivery is supposed to be the safest mode of delivery. However to escape from the unbearable labor pain many women are opting for painless delivery with the help of epidural analgesia or anesthesia. Some are even ready for LSCS to avoid pain.
Ayurveda provides you with the protocol to be followed throughout your pregnancy, called as ‘Garbhini Paricharya’. Right from conception, specific decoctions are mentioned for every passing month of pregnancy. ‘Basti’ therapy is advised during eighth and ninth month of pregnancy to facilitate the easy expulsion of the fetus and ensure the normal delivery.
- One should avoid coitus, exercise, excessive satiation (santarpana), emaciation (apatarpana), day sleep, awakening in night, excessive riding on vehicle, squatting position (utkatukasana), oleation (snehana), bloodletting, suppression of natural urges.
- One should eat freshly prepared food which is easy to digest in adequate quantity.
- Your meals should be fresh, warm, liquid, unctuous.
- One should avoid stale and dry food in main meals.
- Use of milk, rice, ghee, butter, desserts like ‘Payasam’ prepared from milk, should be consumed in abundance on daily basis throughout the pregnancy.
- On the other hand Spicy, sour, heavy to digest food should be avoided.
- Onion, garlic and Suran are specifically asked to be avoided.
